The Society for Reading and Literacy (SRL) is a dynamic organisation striving to make Singapore a nation of readers and writers. Our mission is to champion reading and literacy in Singapore and provide professional leadership by promoting cooperative work among educators and interested parties in the field of literacy.

Composed entirely of volunteers, SRL:

  • disseminates Information and promotes research in developmental, recreational, corrective and remedial reading;
  • organises national conferences;
  • co-sponsors reading-related activities with other organisations in Singapore;
  • is an affiliate member of the National Book Development Council of Singapore;
  • is a national affiliate of the International Reading Association (IRA), which makes us privy to the most current worldwide trends in reading.

Community Outreach
We reach out to the community through:

1. The SRL E-Journal
SRL's e-journal provides interesting, peer reviewed articles on research done in the field of education, covering areas like special education, reading and literacy, bilingualism, parent-child bonding and other topics of interest to practitioners, researchers and parents.

2. PUBLICATIONS
SRL publications also include conference proceedings and "Tips for Parents" brochures on topics such as: Give Your Child a Head Start in Reading, Motivating the Reluctant Reader, The Early Writer, and Help Your Child With Spelling. We have also published “Choice Books” in 2003 - a select booklist for pre-school children and a collection of articles meant for teachers and parents of children in primary schools and pre-schools entitled Teaching Tips.

3. SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS
Our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) meet on a regular on-going basis to promote discussion and practice of specific topics related to Reading and Literacy. Our SIGs include:

  • Storytellers’ Circle
    Meets to share stories and resources, with the aim of improving storytelling skills and of reviving the art of storytelling in Singapore.
  • WordWrights: Writing for Children
    Meets to provide support for budding and established authors of children's books through workshops, speakers and manuscript feedback.

4. TALKS at THE NATIONAL LIBRARY
As a Friend of the National Library Board, SRL organises talks at various libraries throughout the year.

5. WORKSHOPS & CONFERENCES
Our National Reading Conferences and workshops serve as an avenue for researchers, educators and parents to share ideas on developmental, recreational, corrective and remedial reading and writing. Our workshops and conferences feature prominent speakers from Singapore and abroad.

6. ADULT LITERACY
Launched in 1989, SRL’s WISH (Women Learning English) volunteers teach basic functional English to Singaporean women previously denied the opportunity to learn the language.
