Dear Members,
We recently celebrated our 25 years of The Society for Reading & Literacy and
we are very pleased that despite the F1, we had a good attendance. All those
who came told us that they enjoyed the evening of celebrations.
We are particularly grateful to our Guest-of-Honour, Dr N. Varaprasad, our Guest
Speaker Dr Myra Garces-Bacsal and her family as well as our present patron
Prof Koh Tai Ann who came to honour our special day. Dr Varaprasad gave an
encouraging speech on how we've worked together to promote reading and
literacy in Singapore while Dr Myra shared with us her love for books as well
as why picture books are so special to her and why they are important for
promoting the love for reading among children. I believe each of us took
home something from her impassioned talk.
Prof Koh agreed to stay on as our patron while Dr Varaprasad kindly accepted
our invitation to be our second patron. For that, we thank them both.
2010/2011 will be an exciting Ex-Co year for us as we welcome new members
and a revival of our SIG Learning Differently.
We also welcome two new Council members, Dr Mahasripathy and Florence
Lee and we thank Evelyn Chey for her services as our Hon. Treasurer over the
last two years. She has been a long time member of SRL and she will continue
to champion literacy as a tutor for WISH programme, something she has been
doing for years.
SRL would not have survived so many years without the dedication of our members
and for that, our Executive Committee thank each and every one for the
support.
