Report on STC meeting held on 25th June 2010, by Ms Thong Geoklee. Please read on for details of next meeting.
Dear all,
Our June Storyteller’s Circle meeting was held at the NLB Building, Ebis Room on Level 7. It was a cozy affair with 7 of us present. We missed Rosemarie who was in India for her daughter’s wedding. It was interesting to note that with only one person absent, so many of us had to step in to help. Dolly rushed straight from the airport to chair the meeting. Jessie and Fei Mee came early to help with the set up. And I am writing this report for the meeting!
Jessie Goh started the ball rolling by getting all of us to sing and “go nuts” in a story about her aunt who went around the world and came home with interesting objects/souvenirs. Then, Sushen Huang told a poignant story “I Will See You by the Yellow Fountain,” about a Chinese emperor who regretted abandoning his mother in a cave, and repented by digging a yellow fountain in the cave so he could redeem himself and see his mother again.
Fei Mee gave a brief report about the recent storytelling event on SMRT train that she had participated in. She brought with her the props she handmade for the telling of “Big Mouth Frog” and retold the story to everyone’s delight. She also shared a story she made up, inspired by her son, entitled “Raccoon in a Bin”. Joo Hym kept our brain juices flowing when she told the story, ‘Ah Siu Cleverly Reads a Letter,’ about an illiterate but clever Hokkien migrant couple who drew pictures to communicate with each other. We learned that dogs and tortoises have numerical values as well! I then told a story about Mencius’ childhood, ‘The Three Moves of Mencius’s Mother’ where his widowed mother had to move three times in order to provide him with a conducive environment to grow and learn. Dolly Leow followed by sharing a true story about a pet bird (some kind of cockatoo) that swore in Hokkien. Nobody would buy that bird or take it home! As the saying goes, “the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first” Jessie concluded the cozy evening with another “sing-a-story” version of “Big Mouth Frog”.
The next meeting will be on 30th July 2010, from 7pm-8.45pm at the Ebis Room, NLB. Do come early to join in the informal potluck. Bring only what you can, and don’t worry if you have not had the time to make or pick something up. You are still very welcome to join us! Guests are welcome for their first meeting. Regular attendees should be members of the Society for Reading and Literacy (SRL), of which we are a ‘Special Interest Group’. Members are encouraged to renew their membership with SRL if they have not already done so. Forms could be downloaded online from www.srl.org.sg. While you can always drop in on the spur of the moment, do let me know whether you plan to be there, so we can be better prepared to welcome you.
See you all at the next Circle meeting!

Note: If you would like to attend more storytelling courses, performances and other community events, keep an eye out also for events organised by the Storytelling Association, (Singapore) (‘SAS’) www.storytellingsingapore.com Most professional members of the SAS began with the regular meeting and performances here at the Storytellers’ Circle (‘STC’) of SRL and have built up their expertise in storytelling with its links to performance, personal development, education and community involvement over the years. We are very grateful for their continued support. The website usually has a comprehensive list of storytelling events in Singapore
