This children's book writers
special interest group formed under the auspices of SRL in
the fall of 2001 by SIG founder leader Suzy Schmidt Robertson.
Suzy has since gone back to the US but the group continues
to grow.
SIG members come from all walks of life;
some are published, most are not. All want to spend serious
energy on writing. The only criteria for membership in this
SIG are that participants have to be a member of SRL and they
want to write for children and to support others doing so.
SIG group meetings, usually attended by 15-20 members, are
now facilitated by YIng Miller. Our meetings include writing
workshops, speakers and manuscript critiques. We also celebrate
members' publishing successes. Small groups meet separately
to foster consistent, on-going manuscript feedback. Interested
members plan and participate in the Asian Children's Writers
& Illustrators Conference scheduled as part of the Asian
Children's Festival in November. Currently this group is working
on a writing project with a view to get published. The brainchild
of the current president, Ms Serene Wee, the group hopes to
publish a collection of children's stories for Singapore children
and the world, using place, person, thing, situation or something
distinctively Singaporean to give it some Singapore flavour.
The purpose of this project is two fold, namely to give our
writers (most of whom are waiting to be published) a platform
to showcase their work and to build a community of writers
for children to come together to share ideas, support and
help one another to develop and hone their skills. Interested
parties can contact our Secretariat and indicate their interest
and they may attend the first session as observers before
joining our society as a member and be a part of this writing
group. So contact our Secretariat at secretariat@srl.org.sg
now for more information.
